Stop waiting and wondering. 511 now provides free, up-to-the-minute departure times for San Francisco Muni buses and trains.

How do I find out when the next train will depart?

511 provides current departures times for Muni buses and trains through several features. Please see the table to the right to find out how to access departure times for your trips.

What is My 511?

MY 511 is a free, soon to be launched, personalized service on the phone and web that allows you to customize 511, your way. Build your own 511.org home page or bypass phone menu options to get to the information that you need FAST. There, you save up to six frequently traveled trips, like "home to work" or "work to gym." Then you can access real-time transit departure times for those trips on 511 phone and 511.org. You can also receive text messages and e-mail alerts.

On the Phone
Call 511 and ask for “Muni” as a shortcut at the Main Menu. From the Muni Menu, ask for “Departure Times.” Then follow the system prompts to provide the LINE with DIRECTION and then the STOP you’d like. 511 will respond with the departure times for up to three trains within 30 minutes. If there are no trains arriving within 30 minutes, 511 will not give a prediction. Note: On the phone, the service is only available on the J, K ,L, M, N, and T lines, and on San Francisco's historic F-line streetcars. Other trains and buses will be available in 2008. Remember to ask for “help” at any time if you need it.

On the Web
Visit nextmuni.com to receive departure times for your desired train based on a selected route, direction, and stop. You can also view a live map showing the location of trains along your chosen route.

Why can’t I get departure times for my bus or a different transit agency?

511 does not currently provide departure times for other transit agencies. As data becomes available for other transit agencies, we will work to include it on 511.

When calling 511, why doesn’t it recognize my line or stop?

Ensure that you are including the direction of either “inbound” or “outbound” with the name of the line, for example, “N-Judah, Inbound.” “Inbound” means you are going into downtown San Francisco, or for the N-Judah line, all the way to the Caltrain station. “Outbound” is the opposite.

If you are having trouble with your stop, say the cross-streets at which the stop is located, for example, “Carl at Cole.” To see a list of stops by route, and corresponding touchtones, please click here. (PDF File)

Just say “help” at any time during your call if you need assistance and additional examples.
