San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Retrofit Project

Last updated 4/22/2014

On September 2, 2013, the new East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opened to traffic. The seismic opening of the new span is more than just an upgrade of one of the country's busiest bridges--it is an epic transformation of the bridge into a global icon.

The new span features a Self-Anchored Suspension (SAS) section connected to a roadway supported by piers (Skyway), which gradually slopes down towards the Oakland Shoreline.

Ongoing construction (including lighting, painting, and on- and off-ramps) will require sporadic lane and shoulder closures.
